The Role

  • Ability to use hypothesis-driven problem-solving to develop an approach to solve strategic problems for media companies
  • To help struggling media organizations at a time of reinvention. You’ll work with them to develop digital strategies that will help transform their business, with implications for the wider media industry.
  •  Ability to quickly absorb information from interviews, data, reports and other information sources, to produce succinct evaluation of a situation 
  • Quantitative skills, such as the ability to build Excel models, research output, draw key insights from data or visualize data as compelling charts in PowerPoint 
  • Maintaining and directing strong client relationships and being available to respond to ad hoc requests 
  • Project management skills, delegating work as appropriate to other team members, internal FT experts and external freelance experts 
  • Client communication skills, using PowerPoint slides to efficiently produce output

About You

We are looking for someone with a couple of years of experience in the following:

  • Experience at a strategy/management consulting firm in a client-facing role
  • Analytical Rigour: Strong quantitative skills, such as the ability to build financial models, draw key insights from complex data or visualise data as compelling charts
  • Relationship building & Commercial aptitude: Maintaining and developing strong client relationships and being available to respond to ad hoc requests. Managing stakeholder relationships with experts across FT Group.
  • Strategic leadership: Drive to build the strategy of a growing business from the ground up. A self-starter is a strategic thinker but also has a strong bias to action to deliver on our goals.
  • People Management: Project management skills, delegating work as appropriate to more junior team members, internal FT experts and external freelance experts. Mentoring, coaching and managing more junior members of the team.
  • Consultative toolkit: Ability to use hypothesis-driven problem-solving to develop solutions for the most complex strategic problems. Consulting communication skills, using slides and digital tools to efficiently produce output.
  • Thought expertise and a curious mind: A thought expert, demands distinctive knowledge and solutions. Tests and pushes team’s content and thinking to best-in-class solutions.

We do this by helping them build loyal, long-term customer relationships that generate repeatable revenue, powered by data.

Customer data and analytics supports our continual experimentation and optimisation and has been one of the most significant drivers of our digital growth and transformation in recent years. The FT Strategies Data team provides guidance and expertise across 4 key pillars of the analytical lifecycle: 1) Insights & Storytelling 2) Metrics 3) Machine learning 4) Hypothesis testing .

Role Overview

The Senior Data Analyst will work closely with clients on consulting engagements and / or secondments across organisations within media and other sectors to solve complex business problems. 

We are looking for a talented and passionate individual to join our team  within the Financial Times. You will be joining a fast-paced and dynamic work environment as we scale our consulting business. You will be central to that growth, shaping how it succeeds and will be an early team member of a funded startup within an established institution - an extremely rare opportunity. 

FT Strategies has deep connections in place with our FT colleagues, often collaborating with and drawing expertise from our in-house Customer Analytics and Research team which is made up of data analysts, architects, engineers and scientists. 

This is a 7-8 month fixed-term contract (FTC) ending on December 31, 2024.

What you will be responsible for 

Undertaking actionable analytics 

  • Deliver actionable insights to help clients make decisions as well as project-manage all analytics related components 
  • Provide succinct and compelling storytelling leveraging best-in-class visualisation techniques and robust statistical analysis

Applying technical expertise 

  • Collaborate with senior analysts and clients to gather, clean, and organize data from various sources including internal databases, APIs, and third-party platforms.
  • Make sense of  large and varied data sets to solve complex problems
  • Join, aggregate and analyse  web, subscription and content data in order to answer interesting questions
  • Advise product managers and others on experimental design (including A/B testing) and metrics 
  • Translate technical requirements and liaise with FT subject matter experts where appropriate (Data scientists, data architects, ..) 

Strong commercial acumen 

  • Keep abreast of client’s business strategy, priorities and objectives, and how data analytics can support, optimise and direct these 
  • Keep up-to-date with new technical and product development at the FT to understand, measure and influence how they may impact client’s user experience and behaviour. 

Experience/skills you need to be successful in this role 

Essential 

  • Attention to detail, curiosity and willingness to learn and challenge yourself
  • 3+ years in data analysis, ideally across Web, Customer and/or Marketing analytics
  • Proficiency in data manipulation, analysis, and visualization using tools such as SQL, Python, R and Excel.
  • Exposure to A/B or multivariate testing and statistical test design.
  • Exposure to statistical analysis such as clustering, profiling and propensity modelling 
  • Experience prioritising, maintaining and delivering a pipeline of competing projects and the ability to manage stakeholders expectations 
  • A proven track record of driving positive organisational change using data
  • Self-motivated, with ability to manage and follow up on multiple tasks simultaneously 

Desirable

  • University degree attainment in Mathematics / Management / Business / Psychology / Computer Science / Statistics / Economics / or similar numerate discipline 
  • Skills in Google Analytics, Google Tag Manager and/or other analytics tools 
  • Experience working in subscription/media based business or with an editorial department 
  • Consulting experience would be interesting but by no means essential.
