How we work with partners
We partner with mission-driven organisations, foundations, philanthropists, not-for-profits, media development organisations and government agencies to support a more sustainable, independent information ecosystem around the world. These partnerships allow organisations — often ones imperilled by government pressures or tightening market conditions — to access bespoke consulting services when they are most needed for their businesses to remain viable.
In practice, these partnerships can take many forms and will depend on what the partner organisation is trying to achieve. The most innovative and original form that it can take is “Partner Programmes”, where we are sponsored to provide consulting services to a cohort of similar news media organisations. This approach is extremely effective because:
- It allows the partner organisation to help multiple organisations at once. By providing consulting to a cohort, as opposed to an individual organisation, we are able to leverage economies of scale and offer our services to more companies at better value. We have also seen that partner organisations build deep, trust-based relationships with the news media organisations that we serve.
- It creates a community of news media organisations who can share ideas, learn from one another and act as an ongoing support network. We have seen how important this is for the long-term success of those we work with.
Who we have partnered with
We developed this pioneering approach in collaboration with the Google News Initiative. Our efforts so far have helped more than 700 news media publishers, focusing on financial sustainability, audience diversity and audience growth, and the integration of AI in their workflows. Google recently renewed its commitment – allowing us to provide additional support to 1,000 news organisations across the world by 2027.
Since then, we have also partnered with other organisations — including the International Fund for Public Interest Media — to launch a three-year cohort program for six media organisations in Mongolia to provide them with the necessary tools to continue creating impactful journalism and secure their long-term success by providing funding and strategic support.
